President’s Letter

This month’s note will be brief, as we wrap up 2025 and look to the new year. Every year I think that December will be a bit slower, and in some ways it is, but it also seems there’s always one more bit of end-of-year tidying up to do! I’m sure many of you feel the same, so I hope you’re finding a few moments of quiet to rest and recharge for 2026.
It’s been a good year, from reading your #FirstASFContribution stories, to watching a lot of change around the open source ecosystem. We launched ASF Initiatives, as well as the first of them, the Tooling Initiative. The foundation launched a new logo. Nearly 1,200 of you attended a Community Over Code event, either in Beijing or Minneapolis, not to mention many Apache Local Community events. We welcomed 13 new podlings and graduated 10 from the Incubator. And that doesn’t even begin to touch all the work ASF contributors did this year towards software for the public good. Thank you to each of you who touched any part of the ASF and its projects in 2025.
We hear “Auld Lang Syne” a lot this time of year, whether it’s at the end of It’s a Wonderful Life or the stroke of midnight on New Year’s. My favorite part is in the final verse: “And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere; and gie’s a hand o’ thine!” (“And there’s a hand my trusty friend; and give me a hand of yours!”) It feels like the open source spirit. So from me in North Carolina to wherever you are, I look forward to joining our community hands for another year.
Sincerely,
Ruth Suehle
