ASF Plus One Newsletter: September 2025

September has been an exciting month for The ASF. Community Over Code North America was a resounding success, with strong attendance and an especially warm, welcoming atmosphere for many first-time ASF conference-goers. Another highlight for the month includes the unveiling of The ASF’s new logo. Apache Fory became a Top-Level Project while two projects were retired to the Apache Attic. Community

The four-day Community Over Code event in Minneapolis welcomed attendees from 21 countries and 29 US states earlier this month, with an attendance increase of over six percent from the 2024 event. Those attendees were able to choose from 163 sessions, and attend some great social events, like our opening reception at the Mill City Museum, Trivia Night, and the rousing success of Games Night, hosted by the Infra team. Thanks to our sponsors, the fantastic work of our track chairs, the TAC volunteers, and the conference organizers, this event certainly ranks as a big success.

President’s Letter

Of course the biggest news this month is that we’ve just wrapped up Community Over Code in Minneapolis, and by all indications, it was a resounding success. Attendance grew over last year, but more importantly, as the show wrapped up, there was a steady stream of people independently coming to me and our VP of Conferences, Brian Proffitt, to gush about what a wonderful experience they had had.

I took a quick hand-raise poll before the State of the Foundation talk, asking how many people were at their first ASF conference. At least half the room was having their very first in-person ASF experience, which could easily be intimidating in a space full of projects and people who have been together for so many years. But over and over again, they came to us to say that this conference had been more welcoming than any other they’d ever been to, and we’re now seeing that sentiment in the post-event survey responses as well. Several survey responders described being welcomed like an old friend by various projects and tracks, despite never having met any of the people there before. One person commented, “You actually read my name tag and cared who I was.” Community Over Code Minneapolis truly put the community before the code, and I’m incredibly proud of every single attendee for that.

I also had the pleasure and privilege during the event to unveil The ASF’s new logo, the centerpiece of which is an oak leaf. Change can be hard, and many folks have a deep affinity with the feather that has represented us for so long. But the more time I’ve spent with the oak leaf and the responses I’ve heard from the community over the past couple of weeks tell me that this image truly resonates with the values that define The ASF and its communities.

The oak is one of the most enduring trees and is found around the world. It grows slowly but steadily, supporting vast ecosystems and lasting for centuries. In the same way, The ASF has served as a stable, resilient steward of open source for more than 25 years and is looking to the long future ahead. Choosing the oak leaf as our new logo represents the enduring power of that ethos we saw so strongly at this year’s event: community over code.

Looking to that long future ahead, I spent the week after our conference building community with the broader ecosystem through the third Open Source Congress, meeting with our peer foundation leaders and stakeholders in industry and government. Though the event is held under Chatham House rules, I’ll be sure to share with you the report from the proceedings when it is available. We’re facing some really interesting challenges in the open source ecosystem, and these types of collaboration with other foundations are increasingly important.

Sincerely,
Ruth Suehle
