ASF Plus One Newsletter: April 2026

From the people who power the community to the programs shaping its future, this month’s Plus One issue highlights what keeps The ASF thriving. Meet Jean-Baptiste Onofré in the new Plus One People series, and see how mentorship at OpenSource4You in Taiwan is turning first-time contributors into global collaborators. Registration is now open for Community Over Code Glasgow 2026, with Travel Assistance Committee applications available for both Glasgow and Beijing—offering critical support to contributors worldwide. Alongside strong project momentum and new member growth, the ASF is also advancing a major Responsible AI Initiative to strengthen the open source infrastructure behind modern AI systems.

Community

The ASF thrives because of the individuals who contribute their time, expertise, and leadership across its global community. The ASF’s new blog series, Plus One People, aims to showcase these folks. The first installment features Jean-Baptiste (JB) Onofré, ASF Board of Directors, PMC Chair, PMC Member and Committer.

At OpenSource4You (ALC Taipei), an Apache Local Community chapter in Taiwan, mentorship is at the heart of everything they do—and it’s paying off. What started as one student contributing a first patch to Apache Mahout has turned into a full-on team effort, with students across Taiwan collaborating on quantum computing work, publishing research, and even landing speaking spots at tech conferences.

Along the way, contributors have gone from beginners to committers, embracing “community over code” and building real-world experience you just don’t get in a classroom. Now, many are stepping up as mentors themselves, helping bring the next wave of contributors into the project.

The planners for the 2026 Community Over Code Glasgow are pleased to announce that registration is now open. General attendees are invited to visit the event Registration page, where they can register for the event and also take advantage of discounted room rates at the Hilton Glasgow, this year’s venue hotel.

Registration for Community Over Code Glasgow have been lowered this year, with early-bird pricing available at USD$500 until July 28, 2026, after which regular pricing of USD$600 starts. Late registration begins on September 27 at USD$750. Committers of ASF projects only pay for USD$250 at any time by using their valid apache.org email IDs to register for the conference.

Apply now for TAC support!

The Apache Software Foundation’s Travel Assistance Committee (TAC) is currently accepting applications for both Community Over Code Beijing 2026 and Community Over Code Glasgow 2026. If cost is a barrier, this is your path in.

Foundation News

We are excited to welcome 45 new Apache Software Foundation members. This brings the total number of ASF members to 1,188.

In a 501(c)(3) membership corporation, Members serve a role similar to that of shareholders in publicly traded corporations. Existing members may nominate for membership Committers who demonstrate merit in the Foundation’s growth, evolution, and progress towards ASF Membership. They may also vote in Member and Board elections.

The ASF has launched a new Responsible AI Initiative to strengthen the open source infrastructure powering modern AI systems. Backed by an initial $1.5M from Anthropic and $250K from Alpha-Omega, the effort aims to raise $10M over the next few years.

The goal: give ASF projects better access to AI models and tooling, support the technologies powering the AI stack, and create more opportunities for global collaboration—all while keeping things secure, transparent, and community-driven.Read the latest:

Ecosystem News

Log4Shell exposed a massive blind spot in software supply chains, pushing the Log4j project to overhaul its documentation, security practices, and release processes. The result is a more transparent and resilient project—but one that also highlights the unresolved challenge of sustaining open source maintainers in a new era of regulatory pressure.

Security Alert: Slack Phishing Attempts

We’ve been alerted to phishing attempts in community Slack workspaces involving fake accounts impersonating trusted contributors or leadership.

These accounts may send direct messages with links or requests that appear urgent or legitimate.

Please take a moment to protect yourself:

  • Do not click links or download files from unexpected messages
  • Verify the sender through a known, trusted channel
  • Report suspicious accounts to workspace admins
  • Ignore and delete messages that seem unusual

Community leaders will never ask for passwords, credentials, or sensitive information via Slack DM.

President’s Letter

This month’s big news, congratulations, and appreciation are easy. The ASF’s new Responsible AI Initiative is a big step in the right direction for the future of software and the Foundation. I can’t express enough thanks to everyone who has come together to make this happen. But the work isn’t done. It’s just beginning. The (extremely rapidly) growing AI ecosystem is built on open source software, including a lot of ASF projects. This Initiative will help strengthen the security and openness of the infrastructure powering AI. If you haven’t already, please take a moment yet to read about the Initiative

Congrats are also in order for everyone involved in what, by all accounts, was a wildly successful Iceberg Summit event this month. As much as I love Community Over Code as the Foundation’s flagship event, I also love that we have the energy and enthusiasm in our PMCs to support additional events like this through the year.

Sincerely,
Ruth Suehle
