ODBMS Industry Watch: Community Over Code: Ruth Suehle on Leading The Apache Software Foundation into the Future

President’s Letter

First of all, big congrats to Fineract for being recertified as a Digital Public Good. (See the full blog post earlier in this newsletter.) If you’re unfamiliar, recognition as a DPG is a high bar and an accomplishment certainly well-aligned with The ASF’s mission of software for the public good.

A lot of folks I know have started setting a theme word in January for their year, like a one-word, mood-setting New Year’s resolution. I haven’t done this yet, but if I look back over 2025 as the year wraps up, in retrospect, I could certainly declare the theme to have been sustainability. I no longer know how many talks and panels I’ve been on just this year on that topic. It’s not just about the money–although of course, that’s important. It’s about building our communities and making them strong and resilient for whatever comes next.

To that goal and looking into the future, I’ve been helping our VP, Conferences seek venues for Community Over Code next year. We’ve been telling you all for a while now that the goal is to alternate between the US and Europe, but finding affordable venues of a large enough size in Europe has been a bit of a challenge. Local volunteers who speak the language and can help with coordination would be extremely helpful to broadening our options. If that’s you, please reach out!

Last month I told you that we were also looking to expand one of the annually most popular sessions from the conference into a recurring virtual event: Lightning talks! We’re still working out the scheduling of the first session with the folks who have signed up so far, so keep an eye out for those details. Meanwhile, you can still sign up for a lightning talk slot through April 2026. Same rules as lightning talks in person: five minutes each, hard stop, no slides. Can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

Sincerely,
Ruth Suehle
