How Sponsors Help ASF Steward Open Source for the Public Good

By Sally Khudairi, VP Sponsor Relations

Supporting the ASF advances our legacy of stewarding billions of dollars in community-developed open source software for the public good at 100% no charge

For more than 25 years, The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has been at the forefront of open source innovation, fostering communities, and making billions of dollars in open source software accessible to millions around the globe at 100% no charge.

The ASF is amongst the most recognizable community-led brands in open source — a force multiplier whose technology is so ubiquitous, it’s integral to nearly every aspect of modern computing and used in every Internet-connected country on the planet.

Your Generosity Helps the Community-at-large

Sponsorship support enables the ASF to continue to develop, shepherd, and incubate dozens of open source projects and their communities in a trusted, vendor-neutral environment.

As a US 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization, our day-to-day operating costs are offset by sponsorship revenues. The majority of our nearly $3M annual budget is applied towards essential infrastructure services that keep ASF Projects and their communities running around the clock. We continue to operate a very lean, efficient organization with less than 10% overhead. We do not receive federal funding, grants, or conditional support from any government institution.

Sponsorship funds may also be directed towards specific programs, such as the ASF Tooling Initiative, created in March 2025 to provide users of Apache software the ability to improve their security posture, meet CISA and CRA guidelines, build trust, and advance community-led innovation “the Apache Way.”

ASF operations support includes legal, marketing/publicity, accounting, fundraising, and security services, as well as wholly volunteer-led programs such as privacy and public affairs. As a community-forward organization, cultivating, guiding, and mentoring communities are key to our mission of providing software for the common good. We advocate collaborative development and promote knowledge through programs that include Apache Local Communities, Google Summer of Code, diversity and inclusion, and Community Over Code (formerly ApacheCon), the ASF’s official conference series.

Doing good feels good — supporting the ASF

ASF sponsors enjoy increased engagement and visibility with an accessible, globally-recognized organization whose “Apache Way” of community-led software has influenced countless foundations, OSPOs, and organizations.

Sponsor benefits include a variety of promotional opportunities, brand recognition across select ASF assets, special event sponsorship rates, and more.

ASF sponsorship demonstrates a commitment to the greater open source community and promotes ASF Project governance continuity, whether in the Incubator, a Top-level Project, or in the Attic.

We’re pleased to sponsor the ASF. As a longstanding supporter of the open source community, Visa recognizes the ASF’s pivotal role in fostering innovation and collaboration. Our continued sponsorship reflects our commitment to the open source ecosystem and our appreciation for the ASF’s stewardship of projects that are critical to our business and the broader technology landscape.

Sentry depends on Apache Software Foundation projects including Apache Kafka, Apache Airflow, Apache Zookeeper, Apache Arrow, Apache DataSketches, and Apache Parquet. We believe in open source and the responsibility for companies to give back, so of course we sponsor ASF as part of our Open Source Pledge commitment.
