Corporate Contributions Pivotal to Advancing ASF Community-led Innovations and Public Benefit

by: Sally Khudairi, VP Sponsor Relations

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is one of the world’s most ubiquitous brands in the open source technology ecosystem.

For more than 25 years, the ASF’s 300 all-volunteer, community-led projects have been enhancing the online experience of billions of users in every Internet-connected country on the planet.

We are committed to our mission of providing software for the public good, which enables organizations, enterprises, and individuals to use and build solutions that are powered by trusted ASF technologies. The ASF is present from social media, messaging, and multimedia content platforms, to Web browsers and operating systems in nearly every end-user computing device.

All ASF-developed software is available to the public at-large at 100% no cost or licensing fees.

The Internet’s Top 10 most popular products and services rely on dozens of ASF software projects to serve billions of users each month. These ASF projects include Apache Airflow, Apache Ambari, Apache Arrow, Apache Beam, Apache Camel, Apache Cassandra, Apache Cordova, Apache Doris, Apache Flink, Apache Flume, Apache Hadoop, Apache HBase, Apache Hive, Apache HTTP Server, Apache Iceberg, Apache Kafka, Apache Ozone, Apache Pulsar, Apache Solr, Apache Spark, Apache Storm, and Apache Thrift.

As we are a not-for-profit charitable organization, making our software accessible to all does involve some costs. ASF Sponsors provide essential funds that help sustain our operations, including infrastructure, legal affairs, marketing and publicity, accounting, and fundraising.

Corporate contributions supplement our primary funding source, ASF Sponsorships, and provide crucial funds from numerous companies around the world who share a commitment to our mission. Their generosity helps secure our long-term financial stability through several donation methods:

  • Annual Corporate Giving Programs —companies that give philanthropically to the ASF often do so directly from their OSPO, engineering, marketing, or other budgets, or through their corporate foundations. Strategic corporate giving programs at IBM, Microsoft, Bloomberg Philanthropies, PayPal, Cambia Health Foundation, Medtronics Fund, and many others help support our current and future needs, whilst enjoying tax benefits for their contributions.
  • Workplace Giving —many companies boost their support by providing their employees the ability to give back through numerous corporate giving initiatives such as payroll deductions, as well as employee contribution and employer matching gifts programs such as the Microsoft Tech Talent for Good volunteer program, Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Payroll Deduction Matching Gifts, and Bloomberg Corporate Giving’s Dollars for Your Hours Volunteer Hours programs.
  • Third Party Charitable Donation Platforms —we often receive referrals and donations from charitable giving advisory platforms UK Online Giving Foundation, Charles Schwab Charitable Giving, Fidelity Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, Panorama Global, American Online Giving Foundation, Benevity Causes Portal, FrontStream, and Candid’s GuideStar global directory of foundations and nonprofits.
  • Anonymous Donations —several organizations donate to the ASF anonymously, including a handful of cybersecurity collectives that contribute matching bug bounties to the ASF.
  • Impromptu Collections —we have received donations from exhibitors at Open Source conferences who pooled their funds at their booth and made a contribution to the ASF as voted on by event attendees.
  • Major Gifts —such as the Pineapple Fund’s $1M donation in 2018.
  • One-time and Recurring Donations —we welcome donations at any time via our online donation platform http://donate.apache.org/
