This #GivingTuesday, Help The Apache Software Foundation Power Open Source for the Public Good

On December 2, 2025, millions of people across more than 100 countries will come together for #GivingTuesday — a global movement celebrating generosity and the communities that make a difference. It’s a day to give back, to say thank you, and to help sustain the organizations that shape our world.

At The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), we’re proud to be part of that spirit. For more than 25 years, our all-volunteer community has made open source innovation freely available to everyone, powering much of the internet through projects like Apache Airflow, Apache Camel, Apache Cassandra, Apache Groovy, Apache HTTP Server, and Apache Kafka. Every line of code, every release, and every community milestone is made possible by people — and by the generosity of donors like you.

Your support helps sustain a vibrant ecosystem of participants who believe in The ASF’s mission of providing software for the public good. Here are some of the ways we’re delivering on our mission:

Fueling Research and Innovation
ASF projects are driving scientific breakthroughs and high-impact research:

  • Apache Airflow: The data engineering team at C2i Genomics uses Airflow to orchestrate high-scale genomic algorithms for cancer research, efficiently handling demanding CPU, RAM, and storage requirements.
  • Apache Spark and Apache Kafka: Enable large-scale data analysis and real-time processing for research in areas such as cancer detection and clean energy.
  • Apache Storm: Powers CommonCrawl, which publishes news archives and web data freely and openly for the public good, using StormCrawler — an open source distributed web crawler.

Providing Essential Infrastructure for Communities
ASF software helps organizations deliver critical services efficiently and affordably:

  • Apache Superset: The City of Ann Arbor, Michigan uses Superset for public dashboards tracking rain gauges, air quality, and traffic crash reporting, saving the city 94% in costs while providing transparent, real-time data to residents.
  • Apache IoTDB: Deutsche Bahn’s multi-year BZ-NEA project uses IoTDB to monitor and manage railway infrastructure while migrating backup power sources from fossil fuels to carbon-neutral fuel cells, all in compliance with Germany’s critical infrastructure regulations.

Fostering Open Source Communities
The ASF’s strength lies in its people. Through initiatives like Apache Local Communities and Google Summer of Code, we nurture a welcoming, global community where respect, empathy, and collaboration come first. ASF events like Community Over Code bring contributors together to exchange ideas and build skills.

Supporting Community-Led Development
Our philosophy of “Community Over Code” empowers contributors to build strong, sustainable projects. The Apache Incubator helps new projects (or “podlings”) learn community-led governance, while the Apache License 2.0 ensures that all software remains open, transparent, and accessible to everyone.

Ensuring Software Security and Compliance
The ASF prioritizes the security, stability, and sustainability of its projects. Through initiatives like the Tooling Initiatives fundraising model, we’re investing in modern developer tools, infrastructure, and processes that strengthen software security. This work also helps ASF projects align with emerging regulations such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and U.S. CISA guidance.

As we look to the future — advancing open standards, supporting compliance, and sustaining open source in perpetuity — your support is more vital than ever.

This #GivingTuesday, join us in empowering open source for generations to come. Your donation helps The ASF continue to build, protect, and grow the communities that make innovation possible for everyone.
